Inspired by Endangered Species

In the fourth and final session of summer camps, we looked at the " Peaceable Kingdom" paintings of the American artist Edward Hicks. He painted over 100 versions of the theme, of peace, where he imagined the new European settlers coexisting peacefully with Native Americans, and all species of animals living side by side in harmony. With that as a starting off point, we discussed endangered species and the efforts that are being made to protect their natural habitats. The children chose a few favorites and we did prints with bees and butterflies and owls, and paintings based of tropical birds, Pandas , Narwhals and Dolphins.

This was such a great group to create with. They were so eager to try new techniques and experiment to get to the finished painting and prints. This session they had the option of doing a mural or posters, and they chose posters. At the end of the session I asked them , " did you learn something new,and did you have fun?" and they answered "yes" so it was good all the way around , and a nice finale to the summer camp sessions. I look forward to seeing some of you again next summer.
