Beatrix Milhazes 1960- Brazil

This week we had a lot of fun creating festive collages inspired by the contemporary Brazilian, artist/activist Beatriz Milhazes. She was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960, the daughter of a lawyer and an art historian. She is best known for her colorful abstract collage-like paintings and prints swirling with geometric and arabesque shapes, that are inspired by both indigenous Brazilian and Modernist European design elements. The results are a joyous display of color and exude the energy of Carnaval. Her opulent compositions have made her the most successful Brazilian painter in the world.

She represented Brazil at both the San Paulo Biennale and the Venice Biennale and has created several large public art projects, in Paris, London and, at the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Banco Itaú, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
