Summer Camp Session III

Riddle of the week.-- What evolved from Crustaceans crawling out of the ocean over 400 million years ago , (pre-dating dinosaurs by several million years), were the first to evolve flight, survived global climate changes, can live underground ,underwater and in trees, fly backwards, fly upside down ,leap the height of a tall building, walk on water, build complex habitats with organized social systems, are masters of reinvention , camouflage, design and engineering, and have a skeleton on the outside of their body ? Answer-- Amazing Bugs!

Session III of summer camp was inspired by insects. We looked at their amazing shapes from a design point of view and their diversity. Ladybugs, Bees, Butterflies, and Dragonflies are our personal favorites. Our playground is a natural habitat for Ladybugs and it's always so much fun to watch the kids excitement and enthusiasm and their observations turned into art. We were fortunate to see Monarch Butterflies, (which are being considered for the endangered species list), Hummingbirds, Finches and lots of other bugs.

 Week One: Cave Paintings

It has been an eventful week in our Art Literacy class. We have been all around the world.  I would like to thank all of my wonderful students for their great efforts. We began with the story of the discovery of the discovery of cave paintings in Lascaux,  France  and also looked at images from  Spain , where the oldest known cave paintings have been found,  in the cave called El Castillo. The prehistoric dots and crimson hand stencils are now the world's oldest known cave art that dates more than 40,800 years old.
