Celebrating the Lunar New Year of the Horse Traditions and Significance

The Lunar New Year is celebrated across many cultures. In 2026, the year will be marked by the Fire Horse, a rare and powerful symbol in the Chinese zodiac, art, and literature. The year of the Fire Horse promises energy, passion, and transformation.

Lunar New Year, known in China as Spring Festival and often called Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of the new year in the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. While it originated in China, the festival is also celebrated in several East and Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam and Korea, as well as in communities around the world. It is a time for renewal, family gatherings, and looking ahead with hope. For many families, Spring Festival is the most significant celebration of the year, a time for reunion and reflection, food and festivities.

For the past few weeks, the amazing "Art Stars" have been working on Chinese patterns and pieces celebrating the New Year of the Horse, part of a larger lesson on China. They are so adept by now, readily moving between lessons using a variety of materials and techniques.

These mixed media pieces included collage, drawing, and painting.

 Week One: Cave Paintings

It has been an eventful week in our Art Literacy class. We have been all around the world.  I would like to thank all of my wonderful students for their great efforts. We began with the story of the discovery of the discovery of cave paintings in Lascaux,  France  and also looked at images from  Spain , where the oldest known cave paintings have been found,  in the cave called El Castillo. The prehistoric dots and crimson hand stencils are now the world's oldest known cave art that dates more than 40,800 years old.
